Call the US or Canada Using Skype for FREE

If you asked me yesterday whether Skype would suddenly announce that their SkypeOut service would be completely free with no questions asked, I'd say absolutely not. Thankfully no one asked me that.

What does this mean? Well, in the past you had to buy SkypeOut credits if you wanted to make calls from Skype to regular phone or cell-phone lines. Typically the rates were about $0.02 a minute. As of today, they've done away with the cost, so you can do this for free.

The best part is, they've anticipated the number one question on everyone's minds and given a very clear answer:

Yes. It is really very, very free. There's no prepayment, no minimum use, no subscription, no monthly fee, no nothing. You just download and install Skype and then you start calling. Both the caller and the number called must be in either the US or Canada. There are no strings attached.

There is some hint at the possibility that this may be a promotional deal that won't last for ever...

The only condition is that we have said free SkypeOut within the US and Canada is guaranteed to last until the end of this year - that is, until December 31, 2006. We're not quite sure yet what we will do after that. Maybe we extend the free period, maybe not. You'll hear more about this towards the end of the year.
